Energetic, charismatic performer and engaging vocalist, Anne Harris complements her inventive fiddle playing with turns on mandolin and djembe drum. Harris brings these enticing glimpses into her creative well to the World Music Company Stage on Saturday, December 5th at 8pm.

“Anne Harris’ songs frequently sound born of a spiritual awakening. …songs reference mountains, rivers and deep-rooted trees, the singer viewing the natural world almost as an open-air cathedral,” said the Chicago Tribune in a recent feature. Celebrate Christmas with Spider Saloff at World Music Company, 12/19

“One of the finest jazz singers working in this or any other city,” The Chicago Tribune stated emphatically. “A wicked way with a lyric!” exclaimed The New York Times. Heard world wide as the co-star and co-creator of the internationally syndicated Public Radio series Words and Music, Spider Saloff presents a special Christmas show at the World music Company, 12/19.

Spider Saloff has recorded and performed with such jazz luminaries as Les Paul, Tom Harrell, Nick Brignola, Ray Drummond, Harry Allen, Mark Murphy and Dick Hyman. She has worked frequently with Larry Novak, Tony Monte, Steve LaSpina, Ken Peplowski and Bill Charlap. She has played at leading venues include symphony orchestras and concert spaces such as, The Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC, Wilmington Grand Opera, Wallingford Symphony, The Castro Theater is San Francisco, and Town Hall and Dick Hyman’s Jazz in July in New York.

Michael Smith is absolutely, hands down one of the best songwriters around. His yearly concert at World Music has become a very sought-after ticket, and for a very good reason. Michael’s performances are riveting. His songs include poignant ballads and humorous romps. Michael’s songs are more than just fun and moving. They are expressions of life, love and laughter that will stay with you for a long time.”Michael Smith stands out as one of the few undisputed geniuses among singer-songwriters”.Sing Out! Smith’s music, like most of the best music, is hard to peg. There are elements in it of jazz, folk, rock, even pop; there are fleeting echoes of everyone from Duke Ellington to The Beatles to John Prine.

Smith’s narrative energy in his song-stories could be compared to Bruce Springstein, the hauntedness of his voice to Gordon Lightfoot, the sophistication of his lyrics to Cole Porter or Joni Mitchell, and the depth of his feeling to Tom Waits. But that wouldn’t cover it. His is an entirely individual gift. Who else has ever written about childhood, Catholicism and the embeddedness of a teacher’s influence the way Smith does in Sister Clarissa?

Anne Hills at World Music Company

Anne Hills has, in the words of the Chicago Tribune, “one of the most glorious voices in all of contemporary folk music,” and she’s been called the heir apparent to Judy Collins. Born in India as the daughter of missionaries, raised in Michigan, and now based in Pennsylvania, Anne has been a folk-music institution for more than three decades now with her soaring, crystal-clear soprano and her innovative original songs.

She came of age as part of Chicago’s folk scene, and she has never stopped experimenting and searching: among her many collaborations are those with jazz musicians and with theatrical presenters. Anne’s 2007 album “Ef You Don’t Watch Out” features her own settings of ten poems by the bard of Indiana, James Whitcomb Riley, and you can also pick up a copy of her recently reissued 1995 classic, “Angle of the Light.” We are thrilled to have her back performing in our Concert Series.

Dennis Stroughmatt et l’Esprit Creole – 3/27

Dennis Stoughmatt Cajun Trio

Dennis Stroughmatt’s journey into the roots of Cajun and French Creole music, stories and language began in the small isolated communities around Sainte Genevieve, Missouri. There he learned from diverse master fiddlers such as Roy Boyer and Charlie Pashia, a blend of old-style French roots music, with infusions of Celtic bowing and Metis rhythms.

Later, Dennis traveled to Quebec and to southwestern Louisiana, where he learned African Style Creole fiddling from folks such as Canray Fontento and Black Allemand, and Creole accordion from Morris Ardoin. Today, Dennis is a keeper of traditions in the old styles of both upper and lower Louisiana, a Creole fiddler, accordionist, speaker, historian, and foremost, musician.

Irish Destiny – Paddy Homan and John Williams, 4/17

Irish Destiny is a 1926 film made in Ireland, directed by George Dewhurst and written by Isaac Eppel. It is set during the Irish War of Independence, featuring several actual participants in cameo roles, and features several fascinating shots of Dublin, including the GPO which was still burnt out after the Easter Rising only ten years previously.

The film actually disappeared for many years, and even distant memories of the film were only confirmed in the 1980s with the discovery of two posters under the floorboards of a house in Dublin. A single surviving print was eventually located in the US Library of Congress and was painstakingly copied in London. A film score was composed by Michael O’Suilleabhain. An amazing experience. View this wonderful film and listen to the music of these two great musicians.
